WW2 German Battleship Bismarck - by Zio Prudenzio

A great Christmas present, by Mr. Fabrizio Prudenziatti!

Bismarck in port in Hamburg
Bismarck was the first of two Bismarck-class battleships built for the German Kriegsmarine during World War II. Named after Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, the primary force behind the German unification in 1871, the ship was laid down at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg in July 1936 and launched nearly three years later in April 1939. Work was completed in August 1940, when she was commissioned into the German fleet. Along with her sister ship Tirpitz, Bismarck was the largest battleship ever built by Germany, and the heaviest built by any European power. Bismarck conducted only one offensive operation, codenamed Rheinübung, in May 1941. The ship, along with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, was to break out into the Atlantic Ocean and raid Allied shipping from North America to Great Britain. The two ships were detected several times off Scandinavia, however, and British naval units were deployed to block their route. At the Battle of Denmark Strait, Bismarck engaged and destroyed the battlecruiser HMS Hood, the pride of the Royal Navy, and forced the battleship HMS Prince of Wales to retreat with heavy damage, although Bismarck herself had been hit three times and suffered an oil leak from a ruptured tank. The destruction of Hood spurred a relentless pursuit by the Royal Navy with dozens of warships involved. Two days later, while steaming for the relative safety of occupied France, Bismarck was attacked by Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal; one hit was scored that jammed the battleship's steering gear and rendered her unmanoeuvrable. The following morning, Bismarck was destroyed by a pair of British battleships. The cause of her sinking is disputed: some in the Royal Navy claim that torpedoes fired by the cruiser HMS Dorsetshire administered the fatal blow, while German survivors argue that they scuttled the ship. In June 1989, Robert Ballard discovered the location of Bismarck's wreck. Several other expeditions have surveyed the sunken battleship in an effort to document more completely the condition of the ship and to determine the cause of the ship's loss. - Wikipedia

- Wikipedia

Long Boat Paper Model - by Fitz.Jsr - Barco Longo

Photobucket

This is a work in progress which I've been meaning to get around to finishing for a good long time now. I've since become resigned to the fact that finishing it may be some way off in the distant future, so I've elected instead to upload the model now, since it's in a more-or-less useable state. (NOTE: The figures don't come with the model. Just in case you thought I had some magic way of storing 25mm lead figures in a PDF file.)- Fitz.Jsr.Com

Color And Build Your Own Duyfken Ship - by Duyfken.Com

In 1606 the small jacht Duyfken, owned by the Dutch East India Company and stationed in the East Indies, made a voyage of exploration looking for "east and south lands" which took it to Australia's Cape York Peninsula. That voyage is the first historically recorded voyage to Australia. As part of bringing Australian history to life, the Duyfken replica was built at the Lotteries Duyfken Village Shipyard in front of the Maritime Museum in Fremantle. The keel was laid by the Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander of Orange on 12th January 1997.
The construction process was very different from...read more at www.duyfken.com

Great little model by Japanese designer Masayui, with detailed instructions and several photos in his site.

Chokai was a Takao-class heavy cruiser, armed with ten 8-inch (200 mm) guns, four 4.7-inch (120 mm) guns, eight tubes for the Type 93 torpedo, and assorted anti-aircraft guns. Chokai was designed with the Imperial Japanese Navy strategy of the great "Decisive Battle" in mind, and built in 1932 by Mitsubishi's shipyard in Nagasaki. She was sunk in the Battle off Samar in October 1944. - Wikipedia

Pirate Ship Paper Model - by Pirate Treasure Coins - Barco Pirata

Photobucket
Jolly Roger - The Pirate Flag
Piracy is a war-like act committed by non-state actors (private parties not affiliated with any government) against other parties at sea. The term applies especially to acts of robbery and/or criminal violence at sea. People who engage in these acts are called pirates. The term can include acts committed on land, in the air, or in other major bodies of water or on a shore. It does not normally include crimes committed against persons traveling on the same vessel as the perpetrator (e.g. one passenger stealing from others on the same vessel). The term has been used to refer to raids across land borders by non-state agents.
Piracy is the name of an offence under customary international law and also the name of a number of offences under the municipal law of a number of States.
Piracy should be distinguished from privateering, which was authorized by their national authorities and therefore a legitimate form of war-like activity by non-state actors. This form of commerce raiding was outlawed by the Peace of Westphalia (1648) for signatories to those treaties. Historically, offenders have usually been apprehended by military personnel and tried by military tribunals. - Wikipedia

A Pirate Ship Miniature

- Wikipedia

The Real Thing
The largest military ship of the Czechoslovakian state – President Masaryk – was launched to the Dunaj River in October 1930. The construction work was performed by Škoda Works a.s. in the leased shipyard in Komárno in 1929. The armour plate and other metallurgical material was supplied by the Iron Works Poldi Kladno, steam turbines, machinery and armament was made by Škoda Plzeň and steam boilers Škoda in Hradec Králové. Its home port was Bratislava. In September 1931, trial operation was lunched and till 15th March 1939 when the independent Slovakian State was declared it had patrolled the border between Slovakia and Hungary. Then the ship was handed over to Germany. During WWII it was renamed to become Bechelaren. After war in 1947, it returned to Bratislava and from 1951 it served as a support ship of an engineer company in the Czechoslovakian Army. In 1956 the Ship was dismantled in Komárno shipyard and the hull was used as a support pontoon until 1978 when it was scrapped. - martinships.com

The Ship, Captured By Germans

DDG-178 Ashigara Japanese Ship - by Masayu - Navio Japonês

Photobucket

In the late 1990s with the completion of their four Kongo class AEGIS destroyers, the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) identified a need to develop and build an upgraded version of the Kongo Class to a similar specification as the US Navy Flight IIA Arleigh Burke class destroyers. Accordingly in their year 2000 budget, a plan to build two of these destroyers was set forth.
These vessels retain all of the armament of the Kongo class (whereas the Flight IIA Burkes removed the Harpoon missiles and CIWS systems) while still adding hangar space for two SH-60 helicopters. The LAMPS III package was added in keeping with the Flight IIA capability. The displacement of the Atago class is 10,000 tons full load.
In accordance with the Japanese constitution and the self defense nature of the Japanese military forces, the Atago class, like the Kongo class, carries no Land Attack Cruise Missiles (LACM).
Ashigara, was launched in August of 2006 and was commissioned in 2008.
The Atago class, as well as the Kongo class will be upgraded to Theater Ballistic Missile Defense capability to offset the rising danger of North Korean ballistic missiles. - jefhead.com
